What the Canadian Dental Care Plan can help with

CDCP is designed to make dental care more accessible and affordable for eligible Canadians by covering all or a significant portion of many essential dental services.

Lower treatment costs

If you qualify, CDCP may cover all or a large portion of eligible dental treatment costs. Depending on your income band, you may have no co-payment or only a partial share to pay.

Eligibility support

The plan is intended for Canadian residents without private dental insurance who meet the income requirements and tax-filing requirements. We can help make those first questions feel clearer.

Wide service coverage

Covered care may include exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride, sealants, fillings, gum treatment, root canals, extractions, dentures, crowns with authorization, and certain sedation services.

Help using your benefits

Once your application is approved and your coverage is active, we can help you plan your visit, review expected costs, and make the process feel straightforward before treatment begins.

What to know before booking under CDCP

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal dental program created to help eligible Canadians access dental care with less financial strain. For many patients, that means little to no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. For others, it can still mean major savings on the care they need.

Who may qualify

  • You do not have access to private dental insurance through work, a family member, or another private plan
  • Your adjusted family net income is under $90,000
  • You are a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • You and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable, have filed your tax returns

How coverage can work

  • Adjusted family net income under $70,000 may receive 100% coverage at CDCP established fees
  • Adjusted family net income from $70,000 to $79,999 may receive 60% coverage of CDCP established fees
  • Adjusted family net income from $80,000 to $89,999 may receive 40% coverage of CDCP established fees
  • You may still have additional charges if your treatment is not fully covered or if provider fees are above CDCP reimbursement amounts

Services commonly included under CDCP

  • Preventive and diagnostic care such as exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride, and sealants
  • Basic restorative and periodontal care such as fillings, treatment for cavities, and gum-related treatment
  • Endodontic treatment such as root canal therapy when needed to save a tooth
  • Major restorative care such as crowns with prior authorization, posts and cores, and dentures including certain repairs and relines
  • Oral surgery such as extractions and treatment related to infections or other necessary surgical needs
  • Certain sedation and anesthesia services, with deeper levels of sedation requiring approval in some cases

How to get started

  • Review the official Government of Canada eligibility information
  • Apply through the official CDCP process
  • Wait for your approval package and coverage start date
  • Book your appointment on or after your effective date and let our team know you are covered under CDCP
Coverage depends on your income band, the service provided, and the CDCP reimbursement rules in effect at the time of treatment. Some services may require prior authorization, and some patients may still have a co-payment or additional fees. We always recommend confirming your current benefits before treatment begins.

Canadian Dental Care Plan FAQs

Clear answers before you book

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program that helps eligible Canadian residents access dental care at a reduced cost. For some patients, covered services may be fully paid at CDCP established fees. For others, the program still provides significant savings through partial coverage.
Who may be eligible for CDCP?
In general, you may qualify if you do not have private dental insurance, your adjusted family net income is under $90,000, you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes, and you have filed your taxes. Eligibility is ultimately determined through the official government program.
How much of my treatment will CDCP cover?
Coverage depends on your income band and the service being provided. Patients under certain income thresholds may have full coverage at CDCP established fees, while others may have a co-payment. In some situations, there may also be additional fees if the treatment is not fully covered or provider fees exceed CDCP reimbursement levels.
What dental services can be covered?
Covered services can include exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride, sealants, fillings, gum treatment, root canals, extractions, dentures, crowns with prior authorization, and certain sedation or anesthesia services. Coverage can vary by procedure, and some services may need pre-approval.
How do I apply and start using my benefits?
You apply through the official Government of Canada process. Once you are approved, you will receive your welcome package and coverage start date. After that, you can book appointments on or after your effective date and let our team know you are covered under CDCP.
Can Colborne Dental help me understand the process?
Yes. We are happy to help you understand the general process, answer questions about what to expect, review how appointments are planned once your coverage is active, and help make your first steps feel easier and more informed.
Will I always pay nothing out of pocket?
Not always. Some patients may have no out-of-pocket cost for eligible services at CDCP established fees, while others may have a co-payment based on income. There can also be added costs if a service is not covered, needs prior authorization, or is billed above CDCP reimbursement amounts.
Can I contact the clinic before booking?
Absolutely. If you are unsure where to begin, have questions about the general process, or want help planning your next step, our team is here to guide you in a welcoming and supportive way.
